A SPECIAL CHURCH CONFERENCE COMMUNITY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH June 11, 2008 – 7:30 p.m. Rev. David Eichelberger, Presiding A RESOLUTION TO LEASE FACILITIES FROM NORTH CENTRAL COLLEGE WHEREAS The Administrative Board on June 14, 2006 formed a Facilities Study Committee, according to The Book of Discipline (2004) par. 2543, for the purpose of (1) analyzing the needs of the congregation and community, and (2) studying the feasibility and determining the cost of constructing temporary and permanent facilities to house the ministries of the congregation; and WHEREAS The Community United Methodist Church Conference approved in August, 2006, a proposal of the Facilities Study Committee to install an all-seasons tent on church property to provide alternative space on Sunday morning for the On Center contemporary worship service; and WHEREAS the City of Naperville issued two “Temporary Structure” permits allowing the Tent to be in place for a period up to two and one half years; and WHEREAS in the period following the installation of the Tent, the Facilities Study Committee, with consultation from the Aspen Group, conducted a congregational assessment and planning process to determine future ministries and the facilities needed to accommodate those ministries; and WHEREAS several options were proposed relative to building renovation and expansion to accommodate the church’s ministry plans, and WHEREAS the proposed options to renovate and/or expand the church building were tabled for the present due to the lack of widespread support from the congregation for any one of the options; and WHEREAS the time limit on the Tent (March, 2009) is drawing near; and WHEREAS the Church’s continued commitment to provide alternative space on Sunday morning for the growing On Center service has lead the Facilities Study Committee to consider various options of times and spaces to house that service; and WHEREAS all of the options considered were determined to be inadequate at the present time; and WHEREAS North Central College offered to lease to Community Church use of the theater in the newly renovated Meiley-Swallow Hall (formerly Grace United Methodist Church) located at the corner of Ellsworth and Van Buren streets; and WHEREAS the Administrative Board voted May 14, 2008 to authorize the Board of Trustees to negotiate a lease agreement with North Central College for use of Meiley-Swallow Hall for Sunday morning On Center worship; and WHEREAS the Board of Trustees has negotiated an agreement with the College (see Lease Terms and Conditions); and WHEREAS the Committee on Finance has prepared a financial plan to raise the funds needed to cover the cost of the lease agreement (see Proposed Financial Plan); and WHEREAS the Committee on Christian Education has prepared a plan for providing Child Care and a Christian Education program for children involved in the On Center service (see Christian Education Plan); THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that Community United Methodist Church, through its Board of Trustees, enter into a lease agreement with North Central College, effective August 24, 2008, for use of Meiley-Swallow Hall for Sunday morning On Center worship and Christian Education programming; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Church, through its Board of Trustees, accept the conditions of the lease agreement including the three year term at a total cost of $220,000; and BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the Facilities Study Committee continue to work to fulfill its charge to develop a feasible plan for the renovation and expansion of the church building to meet City Building Code requirements and to accommodate the future ministries of the congregation in line with the Church’s mission and vision.
