The mission of CUMC’s Children’s Christian Education Ministry is to provide vibrant, authentic, and creative opportunities that allow children to grow in community with one another while growing in their faith and relationship with God. Pending passage of the OnCenter/Meiley Swallow Proposal, the Community UMC Christian Education Committee has determined the following course of action: General Information: I. All 9:30 Children’s Sunday school offerings will continue in their current configuration, utilizing Cokesbury’s “Rock Solid” curriculum. II. The current model of 11:00 children’s Christian Education offerings would be replaced by a “Children’s Chapel” worship education component during both 11:00 worship services. a) Children’s Chapel would be offered at both campuses for children ages 2 through 3rd grade each Sunday of the month except for Communion Sundays (following the current 11:00 model). On Communion Sundays, 2 & 3 year old children will attend Children’s Chapel, while all other children remain in worship with their families. b) Children in 4th grade and above would remain in worship with their families for the entirety of the service. Nursery: III. All children ages birth up to 2 years of age will continue to be cared for in the CUMC nursery during ALL worship services. Parents will be contacted if needed through a yet-to-be- determined communications plan. For the health and safety of our children, all parents would complete and sign a consent and waiver form before leaving campus. Location: IV. Children’s Chapel will take place in the lobby of Meiley Swallow[*], immediately following the drama (or similar worship component) in OnCenter, and in the Chapel of Community UMC immediately following Time With Children in the Sanctuary. a) (The equipment and logistics of this plan are still to be determined.) Curriculum: V. Children’s Chapel will be identical in both its curriculum and method of presentation at both the CUMC campus and the Meiley Swallow Campus. a) Children’s Chapel at both campuses will utilize the primary curriculum “Kid’s Own Worship”, a Children’s Church curriculum published by Group Publishing, and will supplement it with Children’s Church resources published by Abingdon Press. Volunteers: VI. To facilitate Children’s Chapel at both campuses, our volunteer numbers would remain the same as they have been for the 2007-2008 academic year during 11:00 Sunday school, but with redefined roles. The following minimum volunteer requirements are needed per Sunday at EACH campus (for a total of 8 each Sunday): a) 1 Children’s Chapel Worship Leader each Sunday. b) 3 Children’s Chapel Worship Assistants each Sunday Any questions regarding the components of this document may be directed to Beth Elders, Minister of Christian Education (belders@communityunitedmethodist.org). Footnotes: * Except for the Sundays that NCC holds an art exhibit in the lobby. On these Sundays (CUMC must be notified well in advance), Children’s Chapel will take place in an alternate location for 2 and 3 year olds only. All other children will remain in OnCenter worship.
