Adult Christian Education

United Methodism is historically rooted in adult study and education, and those traditions are alive and well at Community UMC. With six active adult Sunday School classes and a variety of special offerings, Community UMC has something for everyone. All the adult Sunday School classes are open, welcoming to visitors, and meet at 9:30 a.m. from September through May. Why not try one?

Fellowship and Activities

Adult programs include many opportunities for fellowship, ministry, service, and just plain fun. Community UMC has organized chapters of both the United Methodist Men and United Methodist Women; covenant groups; sports teams; art and craft groups; book groups; and even a theater group! And that's not counting many ministry teams that help with the mission and programs of the church. If you see something on that list that piques your interest, why not try it out? United Methodist Women

Our purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.

The United Methodist Women is a one-million member organization whose purpose is to foster spiritual growth, develop leaders and advocate for justice. Members raise more than $20 million a year for programs and projects related to women, children and youth in the United States and in more than 100 countries around the world. Any woman can be a member whether she is United Methodist or not.

Community UMC's UMW participates in the ministries of the global UMW and has many local groups. These include Studio Workshop, which meets Thursday mornings at 9:30 a.m. [childcare provided], to work on crafts for the annual Harvest of the Hands craft show; the Knitting Circle, which meets Monday evenings at 7:00 p.m., to make prayer shawls and other knitted goods; and the Book Circle, which meets monthly from September to May. Please contact us for further information.

United Methodist Men

Each church or charge shall have an organized unit of United Methodist Men chartered and annually re-certified through the General Commission on United Methodist Men to provide a dedicated ministry for building men spiritually and involving men in the total ministry of the Church.

Community UMC's UMM gather for fellowship before the early service the third Sunday each month. In addition to coffee and donuts, discussion is served with invited speakers often leading the way; it's worth setting the alarm clock a little early. The UMM is also active in service projects, including Habitat for Humanity and Marcy-Newberry. They also have outings to the Kane County Cougars baseball games. Please contact us for further information.

Covenant Disciple

For more than 25 years, the Methodist Church has sanctioned covenant groups to help members explore their faith more deeply, and with more accountability. Community UMC currently has five covenant groups (three for women, two for men) but always has room for more. The groups of about 5-8 men or women meet weekly for an hour at a schedule they determine to discuss their successes and failures in following a set of agreed-upon disciplines. The trust within each group allows members to accept themselves and one another by seeking the grace of God.

Community Swingers

For over a decade, Community UMC has fielded a women's softball team in the local church league. Games are held on Tuesdays in the summer; see the church calendar for details. Please contact us for further information.

Community Players

Established more than 20 years ago, Community UMC's theater group puts on two shows a year, in the Fall and Spring. Auditions are open to everyone, whether a member of church or not. If time on stage doesn't appeal, the group is always looking for help behind the scenes. Money raised goes to a wide variety of church projects. Please contact us for further information.
